In a release before the event, Maggie Seer, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Chapter of The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, called it a chance to stand with the community and move towards a cure.

“Take Steps is more than a walk, it’s a chance to stand with patients and families in our community and move closer to cures,” Seer said via the release.

According to the release, nearly 1 in 100 Americans has either Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis; two local individuals who battle these diseases every day were recognized at the event as Honored Heroes.

15-year-old Violet Beau of Green Bay was diagnosed with Crohn’s when she was eight, and 21-year-old Grace Nimmer, a nursing student from Green Bay, was diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis after battling COVID and influenza-A.

“I think it’s really cool how people are here to support everybody,” Grace said. “Just to see the challenges we go through, to feel so loved by all these people, I love the walk portion.”

Grace added that it’s important not to feel alone in a battle like this as well, and that sharing her story is crucial for her because of how it builds compassion.

“I share my story to raise awareness about autoimmune diseases and show that life can be fully lived despite them,” Grace said. “Awareness builds understanding. Understanding builds compassion. Compassion changes the world.”
